How different is Drachten, which emerged from several smaller villages in the seventeenth century. The area was rich in raised bogs and this was for a long time one of the most important sources of income for the village. In the 1950s, Drachten grew explosively into a larger town. An important cause was the fact that multinational Philips established itself here. The factory, where fourteen employees were allowed to work, was opened in May 1950. The company's plant in Drachten still makes its world-famous razors here. Based on its size, industry, public facilities and economic value, Drachten can be seen as a fully-fledged city, but the place has never been granted city rights.

When you arrive in Drachten you can see the water tower from a distance. The bulky, gray building was built in 1959. The design was made by architect JJM Vegter, who provided the tower with two water reservoirs. In total, the 42-meter-high water tower can store 1,500 cubic meters of water.
