Description

This ride over the heath and through the woods starts at Golden Tulip Ampt van Nijkerk. It is the ideal place to prepare your ride with a nice cup of coffee or to round it off with a drink or a tasty meal. Mill't Hert is located in Putten. The wooden octagon was built in 1899 to replace its predecessor, which had burned down. The rare thing about this mill is that it has three rack doors. Grain is still milled in the mill on a voluntary basis. You cycle over the Ermelosche Heath. The highest point on the Ermelosche Heide is the Paalberg, a small moraine from the ice age. You will find burial mounds from the time of the Bell Beaker culture and the earthen ramparts of a Roman army camp. If you are lucky, you will encounter a flock of sheep. It grazes here all year round to keep the heath open and thus help maintain the landscape. You cycle through the vast greenery of the Speulderbos. It is one of the oldest forests in the Netherlands, formed during an ice age. You can still see this in the moraines in the landscape. The crooked trees in the forest, which were not cut down because they were less suitable for building boats, are known as the'dancing trees\\\'. They provide a fairytale decor when the fog hangs between the trees or the sun shines on the trunks. At dusk there is a good chance that you will encounter game, but you can also see the smooth snake darting away in the vegetation. In Boeschoten, a part of the Speulderbos, you cycle past a sheepfold. when you see the shepherd with his sheep through the forest and the heath, it is as if time has stood still here. Corn mill De Hoop was built in 1888. The mill also once housed a couple of pelts, so it probably had multiple functions. The two entrance gates of the mill are not opposite each other: anyone who entered with a horse and carriage had to make a bend in the mill. Nijkerk was built in 1413 with earthen walls and wooden gates. In the city fire of 1540 the city burned down almost completely. Nijkerk flourished in the 18th century and lived from tobacco cultivation, trade and glassworks. In 1795 it was the largest city in the Veluwe. This can still be clearly seen in the architecture: in the current center there are many beautiful mansions from that time. Do you want to crawl between the clean sheets in Golden Tulip Ampt van Nijkerk, tired but satisfied? If you opt for a relaxing overnight stay, you can get back on your bike the next day with route 137835, which also starts from this point.
