Polders, as far as you can see. The horizon that is so far away makes you realize how small you actually are in the world. Straight-drawn water bodies - canals, waterways, channels and ditches - but also more irregular gullies and fens serve one purpose here: regulating the water level. The area around Niekerk and Leek was drained and mined for cultural use.
In this vastness, you can hardly imagine that the Netherlands has approximately four thousand polders! The next stop is the Eben Haëzer mill, which is located in Enumatil. There was previously a mill on this site that went up in flames, so the tower mill was rebuilt on this site in 1907. The octagon of another mill from Dokkum was used for the mill. In 1951 a serious accident occurred: the mill scaffolding fell, seriously injuring three people standing on it. The mill was renovated and in 2013 volunteer millers still run the flour mill occasionally.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
