Kruiningen, Yerseke and 's-Gravenpolder

South Beveland is small-scale and green. The landscape is divided into irregular blocks or parcels by streams, ditches, hedges and dikes.

The irregular micro-relief was created by the extraction of salt from peat, but it is also shaped by the many drinking pools and the beautiful hawthorn hedges that lie in the area. There are also a few refuge mounds, which were thrown up by the inhabitants of the area in the Middle Ages to build old wooden castles, or where they fled to during high water. The dikes are overgrown with double rows of trees and fruit farms grow their fruit between the hawthorn hedges on small plots of land, while the landscape further north has an upright vegetation and therefore has an open character.

The first one is in Wemeldinge and bears a name that many other mills also have: De Hoop. The mill was built in 1866 by a miller's apprentice who worked at the predecessor of the other mill in Wemeldinge (Aeolus). The mill was in operation until 1968. After that, plans were made to convert the mill into a house, but these plans were also shelved. Nowadays, the white round stone mill with two pairs of millstones still grinds grain on a voluntary basis.

The other mill, De Korenhalm, that you pass during the bike ride is located on the edge of 's-Gravenpolder. The round, brick-built tower mill towers proudly above the surrounding fields. The mill was built in 1876, three years after a predecessor burned down fifty meters from this location. In 2013, the mill is no longer in operation, but it is still operational.
