Zoutelande, Westkapelle and Domburg

Seaside towns with a fairly insignificant history can still be very attractive to settle down. Domburg, a seaside resort that has been drawing people to the sea for centuries. People built summer residences there early in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries so that they could enjoy a wonderful season by the sea, but the history of Domburg as a seaside resort really begins in 1834. Then two families from Middelburg decide to take a sea bath in bathing carriages . They set a trend and Domburg was gradually opened up to the rest of Zeeland. Westkapelle also does not have a particularly impressive history, but the village was badly hit by a bombing raid during the Second World War. It was almost completely wiped off the map. In 2013 there is still a creek in Westkapelle, which was created as a result of the bombing. A clear reminder of the war and the liberation is the Sherman tank that still looks out over the water on the dike. Near the'Hoge Licht\\\' lighthouse, for which Westkapelle is known, are also the graves of the war victims. It is nice to visit the Polderhuis Westkapelle Dike and War Museum, which is located at the bottom of a sturdy sea dike. The museum shows you the history of the dike village in a very personal way. Stories, photos and objects teach you more about the habits and customs. Naturally, the bombardment is also depicted in detail. Continue your tour and set course for the Lage lighthouse of Westkapelle (Noorderhoofd). The red lighthouse was built in 1875 and has a height of 11.5 meters. Because Westkapelle has two lighthouses and the other signals a higher light signal, this is called the"Westkapelle Laag\\\". The four-storey lighthouse looks simple, but it is a beautiful object. The Meliskerkse windmill is located a few kilometers away in Meliskerke. This round, stone ground sailer dates from 1801. The flour mill was built at the time to replace a post mill, which blew over during a violent storm. The mill ground grain until 1954, but then fell into disrepair until it was restored in 1987.
