Description

Seaside resorts with a fairly insignificant history can still be very attractive to visit. Domburg, a seaside resort that has been attracting people to the sea for centuries. People built summer homes there early on in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, so that they could enjoy a wonderful season by the sea, but Domburg's history as a seaside resort only really begins in 1834. Then two Middelburg families decide to take a sea bath in bathing carriages. . They set a trend and slowly Domburg became accessible to the rest of Zeeland. Westkapelle also does not have a particularly impressive history, but the village was badly hit by a bombing during the Second World War. This almost completely wiped it off the map. In 2013, there is still a creek in Westkapelle, which was created as a result of the bombing. A clear reminder of the war and the liberation is the Sherman tank that still stands on the dike overlooking the water. Close to the lighthouse 'Hoge Licht', for which Westkapelle is known, are also the graves of the war victims. It is nice to visit the Polderhuis Westkapelle Dike and War Museum, which is located at the bottom of a sturdy sea dike. The museum shows you the history of the dike village in a very personal way. Stories, photos and objects teach you more about the customs and customs. Of course, the bombing is also depicted in detail. Continue your tour and head to the Lage lighthouse of Westkapelle (Noorderhoofd). The red lighthouse was built in 1875 and has a height of 11.5 meters. Because Westkapelle has two lighthouses and the other one sends a higher light signal, this is called the"Westkapelle Low\\\". The four-storey lighthouse looks simple, but is a beautiful object. A few kilometers further in Meliskerke is the Meliskerkse mill. This round, stone ground sailor dates from 1801. The flour mill was built at the time to replace a post mill, which blew over during a heavy storm. The mill ground grain until 1954, but then fell into disrepair until it was restored in 1987. Anyone who is curious about how the mill works can visit it on Saturdays.
