Groede is an authentic village that was a Red Cross village during the Second World War. This meant that the village was not bombed. The village has therefore retained its character and still has many Flemish-style houses. You can really taste this old atmosphere on the cozy market. Also in the center of Groede is the Museumstraatje (Slijkstraat) with shops and old crafts.
Windmill of Aalbrechtse (hull/remainder) is the first point of interest on the route. This beautiful round stone ground sailer was built around 1848 as a flour mill. The mill was dismantled in 1931 and the hood was removed in 1934. A year later, the mill was furnished as a holiday home and was given the striking platform that can still be seen today.
You then cycle on to the next mill in Retranchement. The Retranchementse Molenis an open post mill built in 1818. It replaces its predecessor, which was built in 1648 and blown down in 1817. The mill was mainly used for grinding corn. The mill now runs on a voluntary basis.
