Groede is an authentic village that was a Red Cross village during the Second World War. This meant that the village was not bombed. The village has retained its character and still has many houses in Flemish style. You can get a good taste of this old atmosphere on the cozy market. Also in the center of Groede is the Museumstraatje (Slijkstraat) with shops and old crafts.
The Aalbrechtse mill (hull/remains) is the first attraction on the route. This beautiful round stone ground sailor was built around 1848 as a flour mill. The mill was dismantled in 1931 and later the roof was removed in 1934. A year later, the mill was converted into a holiday home and was given the striking platform that can still be seen today.
You then cycle to the next mill in Retranchement. The Retranchementse Molen is an open post mill built in 1818. It replaces its predecessor, which was built in 1648 and blown down in 1817. The mill was mainly used for grinding corn. The mill now runs on a voluntary basis.
