Lauwersmeer National Park is a vast landscape, home to many different, sometimes rare animals and plants. Many birds come to rest on and around the water, from geese, ducks and bearded ducks to meadow birds that build their nests further inland.
Marnewaard is the eastern part of the Lauwersmeer area, which became dry after its closure in 1969. The area, which is largely used by the Ministry of Defense as a training area, consists of former sandbanks and has been transformed into a very diverse area. The military training village of Marnehuizen is located there, but a smaller part is also used as a nature reserve. Parts that used to be salt marshes have been converted into agricultural land.
Molen Eendracht in Anjum is the first stop. The tower mill from 1889 was built with an octagonal top gate. The mill was used as a grist and husking mill and was installed after an earlier monk mill was struck by lightning and burned down. Parts of two mills that previously stood in Leeuwarden were used to build the Eendracht. The mill was decommissioned in 1965. After the mill changed hands a number of times, it was restored. There is a museum in the mill, which tells you more about the history of the Eendracht.
The Onderneming mill is next on the program in Vierhuizen. This flour mill dates from 1858. This is also a tower mill with an octagonal top mill, which replaced an earlier mill. A small ground sailor originally stood on the site of the Company. What is special is that between 1971 and 2001, more than seventy volunteer millers learned their trade at the Company. The old teacher Bernard Dijk died in 2001 and although lessons are no longer given, the old flour mill still runs regularly. It is operated by a volunteer miller.
