Watching boats around Ouddorp

On Goeree-Overflakkee, around Goedereede and Ouddorp, you can cycle beautifully along the water. The port of Ouddorp was previously used for herring fishing. Nowadays it functions as a marina, where all kinds of boats and ships are anchored.

More than ten kilometers further you will see the Westhoofd lighthouse looming in the dunes near Ouddorp. This square tower was built of bricks between 1947 and 1950. The national monument reaches an impressive height of 56 meters. Then you cycle on to Korenlust, a flour mill that was built in Stellendam in 1856. The mill was in operation until 1961. Since 1988, the mill has been owned by the Goeree-Overflakkee Mill Foundation.

The origins of the island of Goeree-Overflakkee
The island of Goeree-Overflakkee used to consist of several small islands. In the battle against the water of the North Sea, man gradually conquered more and more land and the polders were constructed one by one. The first reclamation took place in the twelfth century, when the Oudeland polder of Diependorst was reclaimed. However, the conquests of the territory were not without difficulty and the island was regularly hit by floods before the construction of the Delta Works. For example, 22 people drowned during the Storm Flood of 1682 and the Flood of 1953 claimed the lives of 481 people.
