Watching boats around Ouddorp

On Goeree-Overflakkee, around Goedereede and Ouddorp, you can cycle beautifully along the water. The port of Ouddorp was formerly used for herring fishing. Today it functions as a marina, where all kinds of boats and ships are anchored.

More than ten kilometers further you will see lighthouse Westhoofd looming in the dunes near Ouddorp. This square tower was built from bricks between 1947 and 1950. The national monument reaches an impressive height at 56 meters. You then cycle on to Korenlust, a flour mill that was built in 1856 in Stellendam. The mill was in operation until 1961. Since 1988, the mill has been owned by the Molenstichting Goeree-Overflakkee.

The origin of the island of Goeree-Overflakkee
The island of Goeree-Overflakkee used to consist of several small islands. In the battle against the water of the North Sea, people gradually conquered more and more land and the polders were constructed one by one. The first reclamation already took place in the twelfth century, when the Oudeland polder of Diependorst was reclaimed. Nevertheless, the conquest of the territory did not go without a hitch and the island was regularly hit by floods before the construction of the Delta Works. For example, 22 people drowned during the storm surge of 1682 and in 1953 the flood disaster claimed the lives of 481 people.
