Kaag en Braassem, South Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 134426
Provided by: Groots Genieten
Soon you cycle past a hollow post mill, the Hoogmadesche Molen from 1897. Four kilometres further on, the Lagenwaardse Molen looms up in the distance, also a hollow post mill. This mill now drains the Lagenwaardse polder. Then follows one of the few remaining sawmills in the Netherlands: the Dekkermolen, a hollow post mill from 1911. The Fort bij Kudelstaart, further on, is part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Around Aalsmeer, many peat lakes were pumped dry and this peat soil later turned out to be very good for flower cultivation. That is why the large flower auction originated in Aalsmeer. You cycle back via the Veendermolen, a beautiful octagonal stone ground sailer from 1830. After restoration, the mill is fully operational again and operates on a voluntary basis.
