Description
This route is a beautiful trip through the river landscape of the winding Maas and along the banks of the Juliana Canal. The floodplains of the Meuse are regularly flooded by the river and form a lush grassland that provides shelter for numerous birds such as the gray bunting, sand martin and yellowhammer.
In this area the Meuse forms the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. The part of the Maas that forms the border with our southern neighbors is called 'the Grensmaas'. The Grensmaas meanders a lot and for the sake of shipping, canals have been constructed along the river: the Zuid-Willemsvaart, the Julianakanaal and the Lateraalkanaal. Beyond Maaseik the river is again easily navigable. That is the domain of this bike tour. About five kilometers after Maaseik, the Maas flows into Dutch territory. Cycling through the Maas Valley naturally means water. Not only of the Maas itself, but also of the old Maas arms and the extensive lakes that can be seen everywhere. The Meuse has deposited a lot of gravel during meandering and flooding, which has led to large-scale extraction. The remains of this are the puddles. They are often designed as a recreational lake, ideal for water sports enthusiasts, or as a nature reserve, where hikers and cyclists in particular get their money's worth. A good example is the Bichterweerd, on the Belgian side of the river, which is part of the Maasvallei River Park.
