Description
\\\'Glass City\\\' Leerdam is located on the river De Linge. This route takes you along the beautiful reed banks and water lilies that surround the city. Leerdam was founded in 1143 and changed into a prosperous city when the wood and glass industry took off. The history of Leerdam can still be seen in old buildings such as the Grote Kerk, museum Het Hofje van Mevrouw Van Aerden and the remaining city walls.
Historic Gorinchem
The city of Gorinchem is also nice to cycle through. The old fortified city, which was provided with a defensive wall at the end of the thirteenth century, has many beautiful sights. Think of the Kapeltoren, the Dalempoort and two old mills: oil mill Nooit Volmaakt and mill De Hoop.
Time for a bite to eat and a drink
The starting and ending point of this route is Fiets- en Voetveer Carolinge. Here you can take the silent eco-boat to cross the Linge, but you can also relax and have a bite to eat. Lunch, brunch, high tea or dinner, it's all possible. On the other side of the river you will find Heukelum Castle. The original name of the castle from 1286 was Merckenburg. The castle was built by crusader Jan van Arkel, following a vision of archangel Gabriel.
National Glass Museum
Leerdam has a long history of glassblowers. This old tradition is continued in a contemporary way in the National Glass Museum. From Easter until the end of September you can visit to admire the old craft and the rest of the year you can admire an extensive collection of design glass.
