Description
Schagen is centuries old; the place was already mentioned around 975 in various documents and is mentioned as"Scagha\\\", among others. The town was one of the larger centers formed by mounds, which were raised to literally keep their heads above water. The name"Scagha\\\" means"protruding point\\\", referring to the residential hills. From the thirteenth century the mounds started to grow, because the sea receded and the soil was fertile. The agricultural sector flourished there, even into the twentieth century. After the Second World War, however, this sector declined sharply, but the town was able to absorb this well, because other activities and sectors had also been developed.
In the nice seaside resort of Callantsoog you cycle to a small meadow mill. De Zwaan was given its place in 1993 and functions as a collector for the surrounding nature reserve. The seesaw mill, which has a special appearance with its two blades, is a municipal monument. The upper house of the black polder mill bears a coat of arms with a swan, from which the mill takes its name.
Another nice polder mill is the Zijpe Noorder G. The octagonal inner porter was probably built in the second half of the seventeenth century. He drained a 205 hectare section of the Zijpe and Haze polder. It is likely that this is the first mill to be placed on this site and until 1958 the Zijpe Noorder G only milled on wind power. The mill was then taken out of operation and the paddle wheel had to make way for a diesel powered auger. Since 2003, the polder mill has been equipped with an iron paddle wheel again during a restoration and can raise water again.
