Buurse and Haaksbergen nature

Your route starts at the Wildenborg Village Shop & Bike Rental. South of Enschede, you'll cycle through a tranquil bog landscape with moist stream valleys. Along the way, you'll find beautiful regional farms and other historic houses. This region once boasted a vast raised bog, of which the Haaksbergerveen is a beautiful remnant. If you have time, be sure to stop by the birdwatching screen on Gervingshoekweg. Here, you can spot various bird species depending on the season. The tranquil Buurserzand is unique in Europe due to its size and wetlands. You'll see a mosaic of heathlands with century-old junipers, forests, small fields, and a few orchid meadows. In the rural German border region, you'll return through the Witte Veen. This heathland and forest area was once a popular border crossing for smugglers.
