Description
Northeast of Zoetermeer, the meadows stretch hundreds of meters in front of you. Here and there the meadows and fields are separated by ditches. These grasslands are part of the Het Groene Hart National Landscape, an area of approximately 180,000 hectares. Explore this peaceful area surrounded by big cities by bike.
Mills between the meadows
From the starting point you cycle via Boskoop to Alpen aan den Rijn. Then you cycle further in the direction of Zoeterwoude. Along the way you will pass the Rooie Wip. This seesaw mill was built in 1639 to replace a small mill from 1567. On Saturdays you can regularly visit the mill, which was previously used to drain the Gemenewegsepolder. A little further on you will find the ruins of the Benthuizer Bovenmolen. This windmill was part of a trio of mills that pumped water from the Noordplan onto the Hoogeveensevaart. The mill was dismantled in 1960 after several failed tests to generate electricity.

If you are a bird lover then this area is a paradise for you. The meadows and ditches are a popular habitat for various species of birds such as godwits, lapwings and oystercatchers. Bring binoculars and scour the grasslands to spot special birds or watch the many ducks floating in the ditches.
