Walking through the land of the Sorbs
The Upper Lusatian mountain country is characterized by natural beauty with imposing rock formations. The route starts in Neukirch and leads over 118 km of forest/mountain paths to the medieval town of Zittau as its final destination. In the town of Zittau, near the border triangle Germany-Poland-Czech Republic, there are many historic buildings. The hiker also passes the ruins of the Oybin Monastery.
The Upper Lusatia is the easternmost part of Saxony. This is the land of the'Sorben\\\', an originally Slavic population group. In addition to German, some residents also speak Sorbian, an officially recognized language. The walker comes into contact with the Spree several times. This river, which also flows through Berlin, has its source in Kottmar. Halfway through the route, the hiker arrives at the source of the Spree.
In addition to their language, the Sorbian culture is characterized by striking architecture. In this region there are still 6,000'Umgebinde\\\' houses with style influences from East and West. These houses have typical Slavic wooden blocks with wooden arches on the ground floor and a half-timbered structure on the upper floor. Especially in the picturesque village of Obercunnersdorf there are hundreds of Umgebinde houses. A luggage service (Wandern ohne Gepäck) is available on the route. The luggage will then be taken to the next address.
