Cycling route: 123242
Provided by: Groots Genieten
A hilly landscape with beautiful stream valleys, steep slopes and a rich soil consisting of fertile loess, flint and limestone, that can only be in Limburg. Cycling through this province means cycling over hills, to peaks and valleys, from one striking place in history to the next location that seems even more important. Be amazed by the nature lease of the National Landscape South Limburg, an area that is 44,523 hectares in total and includes the southernmost part of the Netherlands. The well-known tourist attraction Valkenburg is also located in the area and cycling through the area you will encounter sunken roads and see beautiful high-stem orchards. It is a landscape full of half-timbered farms, chapels and crucifixes, and cultural history plays an important role: processions and shooting festivals are regularly organised. For example, you will visit the rural village of Gulpen, which is mainly known for its beer: Gulpener. In the nearby village of Wijlre, which falls under the same municipality, the well-known Brand beer is brewed. The municipality of Gulpen has a beautiful history in the beer brewery. The name Gulpen comes from the river De Gulp, which runs right through the center of the picturesque village. Upon arrival, you can park your car for free in the parking lot of the Oud Holset inn. This inn is surrounded by beautiful meadows, forests and streams, and is therefore an oasis of peace and beauty in a unique nature reserve. You can also have a delicious lunch or breakfast here, so that you can start the bike ride with a full stomach. We recommend that you spend the night in the cozy inn and make use of our package, so that you can cycle route 123243, which also leads from the inn through the area. During this nice bike ride you cycle through the rolling landscape to the Oude Molen in Simpelveld. This medium-sized water mill was built in 1774. The mill was used as a corn mill and was in operation until the 1960s. In 1961 the land on which the mill stood was expropriated and as a result the mill stopped functioning. The mill is a national monument and, although it is no longer operational, can be visited as such.
