Dune route near Katwijk

Wonderful, cycling through the dunes! With this route you will discover the beautiful dune area between Wassenaar and Katwijk: Berkheide, which originated in the late Middle Ages. The small valleys and parabolic dunes are typical of Berkheide and in the spring you will see many dune roses blooming there. If you pay close attention, you will also see small agricultural fields, which were previously used by residents of Katwijk and the surrounding area to grow dune pipits (potatoes). You start at Herberg Welgelegen, a beautifully renovated villa on the Oude Rijn. Would you like to explore the area even better? Then stay overnight in this nice place. During the route you cycle through the dune area, where the Atlantic Wall runs. This was built by the Germans to prevent the Allies from entering further into the country.
