First a cup of coffee at Restaurant Rivero Schoonhoven and then you get on your bike. The town of Schoonhoven arose north of the Lek in the Krimpenerwaard, in a historically strategic location along the Zevender river. Sconhouen, which later became corrupted to Schoonhoven, was first mentioned in 1257. Twice, in 1375 and in 1518, the city was almost completely reduced to ashes by immense city fires. But Schoonhoven could not be reduced and from the seventeenth century it became known as 'Silver City', because of the many silversmiths and the flourishing silver industry. If you want to know more about the rise of silver in the city, take a look at the Silver Museum. You also cycle a long way along the beautiful river Lek.
