This fort route starts on the edge of Leerdam, an old town known for its glass industry. On a car-free road you cycle through a characteristic Dutch polder of vast meadows, ditches and pollard willows. A little later you come through Arkel, a village on the Linge. Just before junction 39 you see a domed church from 1855. Along the Merwedekanaal you cycle to Gorinchem, a well-preserved fortified town. You cycle back to the Linge, where you can take a break at BY 't VEER. Via Herwijnen you cycle to Fort bij de Nieuwe Steeg. Finally you come through the picturesque Asperen, here you can see, among other things, the centuries-old Sint-Catharinakerk.
