Castle

Voormalig kasteel Asperen

The former Asperen castle was blown up by the French during the disaster year of 1672. The French King Louis XIV aimed for natural borders for his empire and tried to get hold of the southern part of the Netherlands up to the rivers. The Republic of the Seven United Netherlands slowed down the French in their advance by deliberate submerging (inundation). This war strategy proved so successful that the water lines were expanded. The current town hall of Asperen and the pond are now roughly on the same spot as the castle once stood.
