A long trip through Groningen

Nothing beats a nice long bike ride through the wide Groningen. This route takes you through the De Marne and Westerkwartier regions. You also visit the Lauwersmeer National Park.

Humsterland
Around Niehove and Oldehove you drive across the former Wadden island of Humsterland, one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Western Europe. Until 1100, the seawater had free rein as far as Marum. The current land was won from the sea after centuries of toil. Take the time for Niehove, the entire town enjoys a protected village view. The wierde has been inhabited continuously for about 2200 years, wow! The church originally dates from the thirteenth century, just like the one in Oldehove.

The Marne
You will also find picturesque old villages full of history in the Marne. Such as Vierhuizen, a former fishing village that once lay on the Lauwerszee. The restored medieval church is a picture! A little later you cycle along the rugged banks of the Lauwersmeer, the Lauwerszee, which was only tamed in 1969. You can enjoy the silence here at your leisure. On De Gast, a beautiful avenue in Zuidhorn, there are some beautiful monumental villas.
