A long trip through Groningen

There's nothing like a nice long bike ride through the vast Groningen. This route takes you through the De Marne and Westerkwartier regions. You will also visit Lauwersmeer National Park.

Humsterland
Around Niehove and Oldehove you drive across the former Wadden Island of Humsterland, one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Western Europe. Until 1100, sea water had free rein up to Marum. The current land was won after centuries of toil at sea. Take your time for Niehove, the entire town enjoys a protected village view. The mound has been inhabited continuously for about 2200 years, wow! The church originally dates from the thirteenth century, just like the one in Oldehove.

The Marne
You will also find picturesque old villages full of history in the Marne. Such as Vierhuizen, a former fishing village that was once located on the Lauwerszee. The restored medieval church is beautiful! A little later you cycle along the rugged banks of the Lauwersmeer, the Lauwerszee that was only tamed in 1969. You can enjoy the silence here at your leisure. There are several beautiful monumental villas on De Gast, a beautiful avenue in Zuidhorn.
