Description

Dolmens that are hidden between greenery, grasslands with beautiful old hedgerows and small groups of trees that were planted for timber extraction and are now fully grown giants. Paths that have been laid with field boulders that were once in Scandinavia and typical ash villages that are so characteristic of the Drenthe landscape. On this beautiful route you explore the rolling closed deciduous and coniferous forests around Exloo and open heathland and shifting sands alternate. The many dolmens on this route are not the only references to the rich historical past. At a three-forked place is a so-called mark stone near a thick oak tree and the Glacier Pit, a kind of overgrown crater that originated in the ice age, can still be found. Supermarket Attent SidB Drent is the starting point of the route. Here you can park your car for free. In the supermarket you can choose from something tasty to put in your backpack; a bottle of water, a bag with sandwiches and toppings or some fruit, so that you have a choice of something tasty during your break. Then you're on your way! You will come across a special hunebed in the Hunzebos: hunebed 31. It immediately becomes clear that this stone cemetery is incomplete. The hunebed had a capstone, but it fell to the ground. The place on which the stones lie - at the foot of a hill in a beautiful wooded area - is important for the image that the hunebed evokes, because it still appeals to the imagination despite the decay. Past Exloo, in the middle of the Exloo forestry, is hunebed D30. There are still two gatestones, which make it clear where the gate must have been, and shards of what must have been more than sixty pots were found in the cellar. Burnt human bones and an arrowhead have also been found. The latter is a find that is extremely special at a hunebed in the Netherlands. At Borger is the largest hunebed in the Netherlands: 23 meters long, nine capstones and four gate stones, this giant has no fewer than 100! It is, besides the hunebed that was on the route before, one of the few dolmens where human remains have been found. Due to its size, it has always been thought that Borger may have been the center of the Funnelbeaker culture. The'Hunebedcentrum\\\', a museum next to the hunebed, takes you back in time to the Funnel Beaker People. Here you can find out everything about the megalithic tombs you encounter on our cycling routes. Hunebed D21 to D25 are all very close together. Hunebed D23 is in the worst condition: there is only one capstone left that is supported by smaller capstones and one capstone has fallen off the supporting stones. The hunebed is almost no longer recognizable as such, but the fact that the other hunebeds are at such a short distance does ring a bell. Hunebed D24 also looks sad. The stone grave is slightly larger than its dilapidated brother D23, but because they are so close together, it is still an impressive whole. The first thing you will probably notice when you arrive at dolmen D21 is that it is attached to a huge beech. This makes you realize how terribly old the hunebed must be; the beech has become part of dolmen D21 through the passage of time and has grown together with it. This hunebed has huge capstones in relation to its total size. It seems that this hunebed belongs to hunebed D22. If you look closely you will see similarities between these dolmens, such as the three capstones. Hunebed D22 is also called the little sister of hunebed D21. They have about the same structure, although D22 is in a worse condition. You probably don't recognize the stone grave as a hunebed; it is the smallest hunebed in Drenthe. Each hunebed has something unique; the location, the archaeological finds that were made there, the size or the structure. Hunebed D25 falls into the latter category. It's like a kind of park, lined with stones. This hunebed is clearly larger than D23 and D24 and, in contrast to its dilapidated neighbours, is still very complete. This is how you come back from your hunebeddentocht and you see the supermarket in Exloërmond again. The more than forty-kilometer bike ride must have made you hungry, so it's handy that you can buy the ingredients you need at home to put a delicious meal on the table at the supermarket. Enjoy your meal!
