Description

The Wouwse Plantage is a forest south of the village that is also called Wouwse Plantage. This beautiful forest area covers approximately 74 hectares of land and has been owned by the Forestry Commission since 1996. Near the forest is the Wouwse Plantage estate and on the edge is Golf Club Wouwse Plantage. Upon arrival you can park your car in the parking lot and from here you leave in a westerly direction to the Lievensberg Estate, which covers 127 hectares. This beautiful wooded area consists mainly of deciduous and coniferous forests and a 25 hectare heathland. Due to its favorable location, the estate is frequently visited by hikers. The area is landscaped in a park-like manner with picnic areas, a heath garden and a pond. More than 30 types of heather can be found in the heath garden. Then you cycle past the Schuurkapel, also known as the Tolbergse Schuurkapel. This chapel is located in a green oasis on the edge of Roosendaal. The chapel is open daily and there is the option to light a candle. Behind the barn chapel is a beautiful park with fruit trees, grass, shrubs and a pond. Aerden Mill is close to the chapel. This belt mill was built in 1850, twenty years after the Provincial Executive granted permission to build the mill. Construction was delayed due to the Belgian uprising. The mill originally had no name and was often referred to as 'the Aerden mill', a reference to a family that was the owner for a long time. In 1927 the mill was in such poor condition that it could no longer be used for grinding. Many minor repairs and improvements followed, but in 2013 it is still not clear whether the mill will ever start running again. The next sight is the hexagonal Peace Chapel. The building has a tent roof and was erected in memory of war victims and the end of the Second World War. The chapel contains a beautiful statue of Mary and a plaque with the names of the fallen. The last stop is the Wouwse Plantage estate. This estate is approximately 900 hectares and has a beautiful wooded area. A number of beautiful forest ponds and many Scots pines characterize this estate. There are many breeding birds here, such as the nuthatch, woodlark, green woodpecker, shelduck, nightjars and many others. The estate has not been accessible for a long time, but is now open to the public again. Also visit the information center on site, where you can learn everything about the area.
