Description

The impressionist painters Arnold (1860-1945) and Edzard Koning (1869-1954) are known for their Verkade albums and beautiful landscape paintings. Both have immortalized a large number of Veluwe spots. This route leads past a number of these locations. You can start the route at any junction on the route. The route can be cycled in two directions. Junction 61, near VVV Ede, is the starting point of this route. Ede was the home of Arnold Koning between 1897 and 1910. His garden bordered the cemetery. In 1903, Arnold Koning immortalized the'Grote Kerk te Ede\\\', on the Grotestraat in the center of Ede. Via 'the Center of the Netherlands' on the Goudsberg near Meulunteren you cycle towards Kootwijkerbroek. The paintings'Barneveld chickens\\\' by Edzard Koning and'Farmer with horses and cart on the heath\\\' by Arnold Koning were painted in these parts. In Kootwijkerbroek you can visit Art & Antiques Dealer J. Brunekreef (Veluweweg 52) where an extensive collection of King's Art is on display. After junction 25 at the Zeumeren recreation area you pass Voorthuizen. Voorthuizen was the former residence of Arnold Koning between 1910 and 1945 and Edzard Koning's summer residence. Edzard painted the'Dorpsweg Voorthuizen\\\' here in 1930 and Arnold in 1910'View of Grote Kerk Voorthuizen\\\'. Further on you will pass three special windmills. From junction 48 near Appel you can see the octagonal flour mill De Hoop. Just past junction 47 is the'Den Olden Florus\\\' (formerly called the Callenbroeckermolen) and just past junction 11, near the hamlet of Walderveen, you pass the Walderveense mill. From here you can also easily drive into Barneveld to visit Museum Nairac (Langstraat 13). This museum has several King paintings in its collection. There is a beautiful mill near junction 60. This Doesburger mill was immortalized by Arnold Koning in 1903. The standard mill near the hamlet of Doesburg dates from 1620 and still runs on windy days. You return to the starting point of the route via one of the oldest estates in the Netherlands, Kernhem. © This cycle route is offered to you by the Veluws Tourist Office.
