Uithoorn, North Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 115580
Provided by: Groots Genieten
You cycle straight through the polder, along the Amstel. All around you see beautiful country estates. All kinds of small waters find their way through the remote area. The hustle and bustle of the Randstad is therefore far away here. The starting point of this route is in Uithoorn. Then you cycle north towards Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. You also pass Fort Waver-Amstel. Around Fort Waver-Amstel many rabbits hop in the reeds and grass in and around the moat. This fort is part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. The primary purpose was to defend inundation locks in the area. The Fort at Uithoorn had a special defensive position: it was built to protect the (former) railways that ran here.
