History teaches that the regents of a guesthouse that stood on this site sold it in 1574 to Jan Jeliszoon Valckenier. On May 18, 1595 Claes Claeszoon Hooft bought the lands with the house standing on it, from the children of Jan Jeliszoon. Until the year 1675 the Hooft family remained the owner of it. Then Johanna Ambosius Gudde, wife of Cornelis van Diemen, bought it for almost? 14,000.00. In 1684, her daughter Agneta Gudde handed it over for just over half to Jacob Verhaijck, a merchant from Amsterdam. It is difficult to say who ultimately founded the country estate.
