Oud Buisse Heide

The Oude Buisse Heide is an estate where a visual artist and a writer/politician once found their inspiration. They lived here together until the owners donated it to Natuurmonumenten in 1945. They retained the three special buildings on the estate: the Herenkamer, the Angorahoeve and the Atelier. These are surrounded by old forests, spacious fields and meadows, fens and heathland. Beautiful farms complete the picturesque picture of the Oude Buisse Heide. The Maria Toevlucht Abbey is another cultural-historical element in the area. The abbey is still inhabited by the monks of the order who once founded it. The monastery originally consisted of one building; the part that is now the guesthouse. The abbey has now been expanded with a church, a bakery, a forge, a laundry and a chapel. When you cycle past De Moeren country estate, pause for a moment to view the stately country house. In 1544, the then Lord of Breda allocated the area for peat extraction and a beautiful country residence was built here. The estate covers a total of 250 hectares and is particularly beautifully landscaped. Vincent van Gogh, among others, was inspired here; he made his first drawings here.
