A trip through the polders of the Westerkwartier

From the Borg Nienoord you can take a nice bike ride through the Westerkwartier, a region in the west of the province of Groningen. Here you will find everything that makes cycling so much fun: space, tranquility and a rich history.

Wide Westerkwartier
In the Westerkwartier you drive through a mosaic of wierden, ditches, grasslands and winding roads. You can get a breath of fresh air in this wide landscape! And admire beautiful historical sights. Like in Enumatil where you drive past the Eben Haëzer, a corn mill from 1907. There are some beautiful monumental villas on De Gast, a beautiful avenue in Zuidhorn.

Wierdedorp Fransum

You will pass the Piloersemaborg from 1633. It was built by Johan de Mepsche, a famous/notorious fierce Roman Catholic heretic hunter who lived here during the beginning of the Eighty Years' War. A little further on you will pass the wierde village of Fransum, which has remained limited to an eighteenth-century farm, a beautiful thirteenth-century church and a simple house from 1900. Lovers of medieval churches can also indulge themselves in Lettelbert and Midwolde.

Nienoord, Borg and carriage museum
The Nienoord country estate originated in the sixteenth century as a reclamation project in a vast peat area. Now it is a stylish noble estate with a beautiful borg from 1524. There is an exhibition that shows the glorious history of the borg and its former inhabitants in a playful way. There is also an exhibition where you learn more about the challenges of traveling by carriage in the nineteenth century. A special piece of Dutch history.
