2-part walk in Weerribben Wieden and Zwartsluis

Your walking route starts at Hotel Zwartewater. In warm weather you can enjoy a snack and drink on the terrace, right on the river Het Zwarte Water. You'll pass here again halfway along the route, just in time for lunch! Today you walk through the beautiful nature of De Wieden, which is part of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Here you will see vast reedlands, meadows full of flowers and dense swamp forests. No matter how unspoilt the landscape may appear, De Wieden is a cultural landscape. From the fifteenth century onwards, peat was dredged here and laid out to dry on narrow fields. Zwartsluis is located at the point where the Zwarte Water and the Meppelerdiep meet. It was the transit port for the transport of Drenthe peat to Holland. You will see some beautiful monumental buildings there.
