Jacob van Lennep route, Part 27 (Lochem - Varsseveld)

Sunday, July 27. After losing their way a few times, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp see the church tower of Borculo in the distance. At least, that's what they think. Because once we arrive in the town, it turns out to be Geesteren...

Later that day the companions finally reach Borculo. With its dilapidated houses and dirty streets, the town makes a miserable impression. After dinner, Van Hogendorp goes to sleep and Van Lennep visits Borculo Castle, demolished in 1870, and the royal horse breeding farm. He talks to a girl who comes from Bennebroek (North Holland, ed.). According to her, it is "unbearable for a Dutch person" in Borculo.

Fresh lawyer
The next morning the travelers walk through a swampy area via Groenlo to Bredevoort. Here Van Hogendorp suggests making fresh eggnog. Although Van Lennep does not actually like this drink and finds the price of the eggs and brandy far too high, he agrees to please his traveling companion. Remarkably enough, he then drinks no less than three large glasses of the stuff. When they set off again, the boys do not walk with their usual gentility, as Van Lennep calls it. They are drunk and lie down on the grass under a tree to sleep off their drunkenness. They are soon awakened by a constable. Van Hogendorp mistakes this for a Prussian vagabond and wants to arrest him. Van Hogendorp talks his way out of it, after which they walk to Varsseveld and drink tea.
