Description
This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep adventure tour. A tour inspired by the journey Van Lennep made through the Netherlands in 1823 with his fellow student Van Hogendorp. Click here for an overview of all the stages.
Falconstijn
On Sunday, June 29th, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp walked to the Vredeveld Estate. They visited Petrus Hofstede, the governor of Drenthe. Van Hogendorp had also been there in 1819. To his disappointment, Hofstede's prettiest and kindest daughter, "(...) with whom he had had much fun back then," had since married and moved to Sneek. The estate still exists, but has been called Valkenstijn since 1842.

Handprint
On Tuesday, July 1st, the hikers leave Assen. They walk past the church of Rolde and see two dolmens. In Eext, they pass dolmen D12, where the romantic Van Lennep believes he sees a handprint in one of the stones. In Bronneger, the landscape rises slightly. Van Lennep writes that from the road he has a view "deep into Groningen" and can even see the Martini Tower. Geert Mak calls this a gross exaggeration, although he does believe the passage points to the total desolation of the landscape. Approximately a third of the Netherlands consisted of wasteland in 1823.

At half past three in the morning, Van Lennep is awakened by Van Hogendorp, requesting that he get up and leave the inn as quickly as possible: "The poor fellow had been battling a certain fast-jumping vermin all night, and he had forgotten to bring the delicious flea butter that was invented (...) against this summer plague." Van Lennep then writes that he is dressing a little more slowly than usual, so they ultimately leave an hour later. The hikers visit dolmen D27, the largest in the Netherlands.
