Description
This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour inspired by the journey that Van Lennep made through the Netherlands with his fellow student Van Hogendorp in 1823. Click here for an overview of all stages.
Valkenstijn
On Sunday, June 29, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp will walk to the Vredeveld Estate. They visit the governor of Drenthe, Petrus Hofstede. Van Hogendorp was also here in 1819. To his disappointment, Hofstede's most beautiful and kind daughter,"(...) with whom he had had a lot of fun at the time\\\", has now married and moved to Sneek. The estate still exists, but has been called Valkenstijn since 1842.

Handprint
The hikers will leave Assen on Tuesday, July 1. They walk past the church of Rolde and see two dolmens. In Eext they pass dolmen D12 where the romantic Van Lennep believes he sees a handprint in one of the stones. In Bronneger the landscape rises a bit. Van Lennep writes that from the road he has a view "deep into Groningen" and even sees the Martini Tower. Geert Mak calls this a gross exaggeration, although according to him the passage points to the total desolation of the landscape. In 1823, approximately a third of the Netherlands consisted of wasteland.

At half past three in the morning, Van Lennep is woken up by Van Hogendorp with the request to get up and leave the inn as quickly as possible: "The poor fellow had been fighting all night with a certain fast-jumping vermin." and he had neglected to bring the delicious flea butter, which was invented (...) against that summer plague.\\\" To which Van Lennep writes that he gets dressed a little slower than normal, so that they ultimately only leave an hour later. The hikers take a look at dolmen D27, the largest in the Netherlands.
