tour of Werkendam, Biesbosch, Fort Altena

For this round the'pound Sturgeon\\\' is essential. If the pound is not sailing, I would not cycle this round (If the pound is sailing, I would cycle the round: it is a nice, nicely varied round)

The pond Sturgeon sails between 10:00 and 18:00:

The tour starts at Fort Altena, a brasserie with a nice terrace. This is very easy to reach via the A27. On a small dike you cycle around Werkendam to the Boven Merwede. A little later, after the Beneden Merwede has split off, it becomes Nieuwe Merwede. 

Past Werkendam you will reach a cycle path that is very low: just above the water level. At Junction 4 it heads south. You will pass an inland waterway with many birds. There is at least one bench here where you can sit beautifully to enjoy the view. 

A little further on, the route passes the Biesbosch Museum Island. Here you will find, among other things, a bicycle café and a museum. There's a lot to do. See also the website www.biesboschmuseumeiland.nl. We ourselves have seen two rough-legged buzzards.

After the museum, the road winds through the Biesbosch until you reach the pond of Steur. You will then cycle along various waters (Steurgat, Gat van Paulus, Westkil, Bakkerskil) back to Fort Altena (open: Tuesday to Sunday 10.30 am to 5 pm).
