Tour of Oisterwijk, Kampina and Nemerlaer Castle

Your route starts at Boshuis Venkraai. Today you walk right through the Oisterwijk Forests and Fens. In the past it was a vast heathland where many people lived, but from 1800 onwards people started to afforest the area. Most fens are picturesque and overgrown with water lilies. You walk straight into the Kampina, a vast nature reserve. The name is derived from the Roman word campina, which means wild land. In the Kampina you can still see that primeval landscape. All around you will find authentic farms and hamlets. Further on you will discover Kasteel Nemerlaer, which dates from the fourteenth century. It is named after the river Amer and Laer. The castle is still inhabited today, and cultural activities also take place there. You walk back through the beautiful old Oisterwijk.
