Tour of Oisterwijk, Kampina and Nemerlaer Castle

Your cycling route starts at Grill Restaurant & Café Vuur & Vlam in Oisterwijk. During the route you walk straight through the Oisterwijk Forests and Fens. It used to be a vast heathland area where many people lived, but from 1800 onwards people started to afforest the area. Most fens are picturesque and overgrown with water lilies. You walk straight into the Kampina, a vast nature reserve. The name is derived from the Roman word campina, meaning wasteland. You can still see that primeval landscape in Kampina. You will find authentic farms and hamlets all around. Further on you will discover Nemerlaer Castle, which dates from the fourteenth century. It is named after the river Amer and Laer. The castle is still inhabited today and cultural activities also take place there.
