Discovering special historic buildings in and around Schagen. From medieval towers to a mill built on a bad luck spot...
Medieval towers
The route starts at Museum Battle of the Somme 1914-1918, in one of the castle towers of Schagen Castle. This is the first and only museum in the Netherlands that focuses on the First World War. In the other castle tower you will find another beautiful museum, which you can visit on your way back: the Regional Museum 1940-1945, with countless objects from the period 1940-1945. The towers date back to the Middle Ages!
Mill
A little outside Schagen you walk through the town of Barsingerhorn. Just behind it you will discover Molen De Ster. At the end of the 19th century there was a corn mill here, but that mill burned down in 1907. In that same year, the mill owner bought a second-hand mill in Zaandam, which was demolished and moved to Barsingerhorn. This mill was also partly destroyed by a fire, so only the hull is now visible.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
