At Waarland you will find the oldest wooden polder mill in the country. A thoroughly Dutch picture, during your walk along the water and through the polder!
Millhouse
Your starting point, Molenhuijs Waarland, was originally a mill house that the miller used for storage. However, it could not be restored and had to be demolished. But when the mill house was rebuilt again, there turned out to be no more construction drawing. Incredibly enough, the current mill house was built after the example of a photo taken during the construction of a lock in 1912. The stones came from a house on the Veluweweg (Waarland), which was being demolished.
Waarland polder
When you have put on your walking shoes you walk through Waarland to the Boomervaart. The Waarlandpolder used to consist of numerous islands and lakes. This was pumped dry in 1557 with the oldest existing polder mill in the country: the Waarlandsmolen, at your starting point. Two sixteenth-century windmills have survived: the Slootgaardmolen and the Poldermolen Waarland. You walk back to your starting point via the Alkmaar-Kolhorn Canal. Greenery, water, centuries-old windmills: Holland at its best!
