Historical Terheijden
You will discover Terheijden, which, due to its location on the river Mark, near Breda, has had to endure a lot. During the Eighty Years' War, for example. Because the fortified city of Breda was important for the protection of Holland, fierce battles often took place around the city.
The Little Fort
During your walk in Terheijden you will find this fortification from the Eighty Years' War: the Kleine Schans. Around 1590 there was a Spanish army camp here. In 1637 the fort was built in its current form to protect shipping. In 1680 the fort fell into disuse, only to be put back into use in 1830. This time as a stronghold against the Belgians, because of the Belgian war of secession. Afterwards you walk through the countryside.
