Description
During this walk you will discover the surroundings of Terheijden in Brabant. Enjoy the green and wide surroundings and the history that the village carries with it.
Historic Terheijden
You will discover Terheijden, which has had a lot to endure due to the location of the village on the river Mark, near Breda. During the Eighty Years' War, for example. Because the fortified city of Breda was important for the protection of Holland, fierce fighting often took place around the city.
The Little Schans
During your walk in Terheijden you will find this fortification from the Eighty Years' War: the Kleine Schans. Around 1590 a Spanish army camp was located here. The redoubt was built in its present form in 1637 to protect shipping. In 1680 the redoubt fell into disuse, to be used again in 1830. This time as a bulwark against the Belgians, because of the Belgian war of secession. Then you walk through the countryside for a while.
