Huis te Echten

It is not known when the house originated. Traces have been found in the current house that probably date from the 15th century. Many of the former building elements have disappeared due to a renovation in 1808. The moat around the building dates from the period before 1700. The house was then accessible to barges, who could supply the house. The Huis te Echten was inhabited by the families Van Echten and Van Holthe tot Echten until 1971. After the death of the last Mr. Van Echten, his daughter married Rudolph Otto van Holthe tot Echten. In the period 1976 to 1981 the house was restored by the Bureau Monumentenzorg of the province of Drenthe. Today the house in Echten is a workshop of the Visio Foundation. (for the visually and mentally handicapped. Around the house is a garden in which several poles are set up from which sound comes out. This gives the garden an added value for the visually handicapped visitors.
