Kasteel Prins de Merode

Prins de Merode Castle is also called Westerlo Castle. The castle is therefore just outside the city. The oldest part of this castle dates from the Middle Ages. This keep was built by the lords of Wezemaal and the castle had a defensive function at the time. The exact year of construction of this part of the castle is unknown, but it probably took place during the second half of the fourteenth century. The rest of the castle has been added over the centuries. The castle has been in the possession of the de Merode family since 1484, who still live in it. The park that extends around the castle is inspired by French gardens. Consider, for example, the gardens at the Palace of Versailles. At the time, the construction of the park caused many conflicts with the owners of adjacent estates and Tongerlo Abbey. All renovations to the castle were completed in 1721.
