The parish of St. Laurentius was founded around the year 1000 by the Benedictines. The old village church was assigned to the Reformed after the Reformation. After the Reformation, there was a secret church for the Catholics, which was not converted into a real church until the middle of the 19th century. This quickly became too small. The current church building was built in 1891 to a design by a student of the well-known master builder PJH Cuypers. It served to replace the small, so-called Waterstaatskerk from 1847 and was built right next to it. The Stations of the Cross dating from 1871 and the 17th century painting The Martyrdom of St. Laurentius have been transferred from the old church. The three-aisled cross basilica has a high cross tower (54 m) and polygonal stair towers. The beautiful church, made of brick, belongs to the Neo-Renaissance, characterized by semicircular arches, pilasters and many decorations. The tower is something very special because of its zinc architecture: the wooden tower construction, protected by zinc, is rare in the Netherlands.
