Walking through Maassluis and the Broekpolder

Start of the walk
The starting point of this route is Monsieur Paul, a lunch café in the middle of the historic city center of Maassluis. A wonderful base for this walking tour. Start with a nice cup of coffee or end the walk with a delicious lunch. What started as a croissanterie is now a busy lunch café with a warm, homely atmosphere. Monsieur Paul is also open on Friday and Saturday evenings, ideal for getting your weekend off to a good start.

Through Maassluis
This walking route runs through Maassluis, a maritime city with a historic city center. It is an attractive city with a rich history, much of which is still visible and tangible. Consider, for example, the ships and the city center with the two canals. Maassluis originated around 1340 as a settlement near a lock in a sea wall that was constructed between the North Sea and Rotterdam to prevent flooding. Then you walk into nature and pass the Foppenplas. The Foppenplas is the part of the Foppenpolder that was flooded in 1989 for water recreation.

Broekpolder
During this walk of over 18 kilometers you walk straight through the versatile Broekpolder. A wooded area and an ultimate paradise for bird watchers, hikers, cyclists and horse riders can also enjoy themselves here. Scottish Highland cattle roam the area and there is a play paradise with tree trunks and stepping stones; ideal for children. The Broekpolder was constructed on former harbor sludge depots from the port of Rotterdam. The layer is no less than 6 meters thick, making the polder well above the surrounding area.
