The Bijvoetpad is a route across the Hondsrug. Of course you will come across many dolmens, but also forests, fields, meadows, sand and heaths, a canal with bridges and weirs. So much variation! The route starts and ends in Borger. Here you will find the Hunebedcentrum, where you can learn everything about these mysterious structures.
Mugwort is a common tall perennial summer flowering plant. The Dutch name is reminiscent of a Roman custom. The Romans put pieces of the plant in their sandals because then they suffered less from tired feet. The leaves contain a volatile oil, which evaporates in contact with warm feet. This had a cooling effect. The Latin name Artemisia refers to the goddess Artemis. The folk name'mother of all herbs\\\' speaks for itself. The herb was used in folk medicine against women's diseases. There are gall apples on some leaves. The lucky finder of this can, according to an old superstition, assume that he will receive a great treasure.
