Historic Hellevoetsluis
The Voorne-Putten area used to consist mainly of peat, clay soils and marshes. After the third century people left Voorne-Putten and in the eleventh century the first inhabitants returned to what would later be called Hellevoetsluis. The Voorne-Putten area often flooded, which is why people started to reclaim the land. The Hellevoetsluis fortress was built in the early 17th century to strengthen the war and trade port. Hellevoetsluis was the naval port in the days when Piet Hein brought his captured silver fleet ashore.
