Walking through Hellevoetsluis

This walk of almost 11 kilometers takes you through historic Hellevoetsluis, a unique fortified town on the Haringvliet. The starting point of this route is the parking lot on Molenweg in Nissewaard. Hellevoetsluis is surrounded by nature and water and that makes this a beautiful walk.

Historic Hellevoetsluis
In the past, the Voorne-Putten area mainly consisted of peat, clay soils and swamps. After the third century, people left Voorne-Putten and in the eleventh century the first residents returned to what would later be called Hellevoetsluis. The Voorne-Putten area often flooded, which is why reclamation began. The Hellevoetsluis fortress was built in the early 17th century to strengthen the war and trading port. Hellevoetsluis was the naval port at the time when Piet Hein landed his captured silver fleet.
