Bergen op Zoom and the Markiezaatsmeer

This route takes you along the largest wetland in Brabant: the Markiezaatsmeer. You also drive through Bergen op Zoom, a city full of cultural history.

The route starts on the Molenplaat. Originally this was a tidal place in the Oosterschelde, now it is a rough nature reserve. From the quay you can look out over the Markiezaatsmeer. After the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea, this is the largest wetland in the Netherlands. Many birds live on the water, about 125 species breed there every year. At Het Raedthuys you can get off for a drink and snack.

Prison Gate
Just past Hoogerheide you pass Mattemburgh. Many pine trees grow on this estate, although you can also see oaks and birches. Further on you can visit De Kraaijenberg visitor center to learn more about the Markiezaatsmeer. From the quay you have a beautiful view over the Binnenschelde, after which you cycle through Kijk in de Pot, a beautifully landscaped city park. Finally, you cycle through Bergen op Zoom. You can see here, among other things, the fourteenth-century Gevangenpoort, the oldest building in the city.
