Castle cycling through the dunes near Heemskerk

From castle to castle through the North Holland Dune Reserve! You will also visit a few nice places, such as Wijk aan Zee. Later today you will pass the nearby Assumburg Castle: when it was empty after 1867, the paneling and utensils were transferred to Marquette. You cycle to Assumburg Castle via Beverwijk. The castle probably dates from the thirteenth century, the current building was built in 1546. Although the castle looks solid, the walls are thin: it was not a fortress, but served as a living space for the nobility.
