Maritime history in Hoorn and Enkhuizen

A wonderful round from Hoorn to Enkhuizen and back. Out along the Markermeer, back along the Weelen: lots of cycling along the water!

After a cup of coffee at Van der Valk Hotel Restaurant Hoorn you set off. You first drive into Hoorn, a monumental town with numerous historic buildings. This is the unofficial capital of the West Friesland region. Part of Hoorn is a protected cityscape. You cycle out of the city via the Binnenhaven and Karperkuil. You continue along the beautiful Markermeer to Enkhuizen, where you can experience the rich maritime history of this beautiful town.

Regional forest
Get off the bus and visit one of Enkhuizen's nice museums. Such as the Zuiderzee Museum, where you can experience the history of the Zuiderzee and the villages themselves in the open-air museum. Nearby is the Bottle Ship Museum with the world's most extensive collection of bottle ships, including from early sailing and the VOC period. Then you cycle into the Weelen. This water-rich nature reserve shows West Friesland before the land consolidation. You can spot many birds there.
