Zuidplas, South Holland, The Netherlands
Hiking route: 995215
Provided by: route.nl
During this short but beautiful walk of 11 kilometers you walk from Moerkapelle along the Rotte to Zevenhuizen and via the polder back again. Put on your walking shoes and explore the beautiful surroundings of the Rotte.
Nice starting point: Moerkapelle
The name of the village of Moerkapelle refers to the presence of a small church or chapel on the swamp.
Walking along the Rotte
During this walk you will walk along the Rotte for a considerable time. The Rotte meanders towards the bustling city of Rotterdam. The river offers a place where you feel wonderfully at ease - with its lively quays and green natural banks. You will be amazed at how beautiful the nature is in this area! Maybe you are lucky and spot Scottish Highlanders and water birds during your walk. The river serves as a reservoir that drains the excess water from the polders north of Rotterdam. Did you know that the city of Rotterdam takes its name from this river?
Two-man polder
After walking along the Rotte for a while, you walk right through Zevenhuizen. Then you walk through the Tweemanspolder, a polder that is largely set up as arable land. A small part of the polder is set up as a holiday park. There is also a four-gang mill, which used to drain the polder.
