Jacob van Lennep route, Part 06 (Harlingen - Leeuwarden)

Sunday June 8. From Harlingen, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp make a trip by carriage to the homestead of Groot Lankum. Van Lennep is annoyed by the poor quality of the road, because he is shaken throughout the ride. He is surprised that Friesland does not want to know about hard roads, although he himself indicates that maintenance costs a lot of money. In the introduction to"The summer of 1823\\\" Mak & Mathijsen write that in that period every paved (vowel) road in Limburg and the four northern provinces was missing. For example, this made Oranjestad Leeuwarden almost inaccessible in some winters.

Eise Eisinga
A day later, the companions visit Franeker. The university has been formally disbanded, but continues as an Academy (until its dissolution in 1842). Van Lennep meets Eise Eisinga and writes rather disdainfully about the inventor of the famous planetarium . Three days later they set off again. They move into the Bildt, a region that was colonized by the Dutch under Charles the Fifth. They visit the Van Harenskerk and climb the tower. However, the view described by Van Lennep should be taken with a grain of salt, as appears from Maya Schepers' visit here.

Wine
The hikers arrive in Leeuwarden at half past six. Two hours later, Van Hogendorp goes to sleep. Van Lennep spends a few more hours and"a few bottles of wine\\\" (which regularly flows like water during their trip) with an old friend.
