Description
This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour inspired by the journey that Van Lennep made through the Netherlands with his fellow student Van Hogendorp in 1823. Click here for an overview of all stages.
Westerblok
Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp leave Hoorn on Saturday, May 31. They walk along a street that was built in 1660, but is in poor condition because the farmers regularly scrub it (on the orders of the sheriff). The young men only walk with a backpack and have their suitcases sent ahead. They don't have picnics, at least: Van Lennep doesn't write about it. They usually eat at an inn.

Lennep's Law
Enkhuizen makes a sad impression on the traveling companions. You could call it the'Van Lennep Law\\\': places that looked dilapidated in his time often look beautiful now. In the sixth TV episode, Geert Mak gives a reason for this difference: many places were renovated in the 1950s and 1960s, so that we see more beautiful village centers and city centers than Van Lennep in 1823.

According to Van Lennep, the decline of Enkhuizen is partly due to the increased number of countries that practice herring fishing and jawing at a lower price than the Dutch. According to Van Lennep, income is decreasing because "(...) the Russian farmers, who eat a lot of that type of fish, do not taste the difference in taste." The traveling companions visit the town hall, which can count on Van Lennep's approval. From the tower he looks out over the Zuiderzee and sees the Frisian coast. They stay in Enkhuizen for four days and visit notables and the town of Medemblik.
