Description
This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour inspired by the trip that Van Lennep made in 1823 with his fellow student Van Hogendorp through the Netherlands. Click here for an overview of all stages.
Malaise
Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp will set off again from Purmerend on Thursday 29 May. It is pleasant to walk along meadows and fields on well-maintained roads. Monnickendam, however, is disappointing. Van Lennep writes that the city, even more than Purmerend, is in decline. This applies to more villages and towns in the Netherlands: there is economic malaise in that period. The travelers then walk to Broek in Waterland, the village that was already internationally known for its beauty. Even Emperor Joseph II of the Holy Roman Empire and Napoleon came to take a look. However, Van Lennep is not impressed.

Later that day, the traveling companions have themselves sailed to Marken by a skipper. When the inhabitants ask the skipper who these gentlemen are, he jokingly replies that Van Lennep is the king. The residents seem to believe it. Van Lennep calls the island"(...) a swamp with several neighborhoods and one more important village\\\". Back on the mainland, the young men also walk'for a while\\\' to Ilpendam. At the end of the day, Van Lennep pierces the blisters on his feet.

The companions walk to Oosthuizen the next day via Edam. They visit the tomb of Lord De Vicq and enjoy the view over the Beemster. In Hoorn they take a look at the Beggar's House. Here they hear, to their indignation, how a woman died in childbirth after learning that her husband had been sent to the Ommerschans penal colony.
